Too Deep In The Spirit?

I find it incredibly annoying when people are tooooo spiritual. As much as one ought to be ‘correct’ in their faith, close to their God etc excitement takes them a bit over the top from time to time. My mum is all too fond of this, even to the point where you sometimes can’t even have simple conversations with her without her bringing the Holy Spirit into it, everything must be linked to religion, religion and more religion. Her intimacy with God is truly a wonderful thing, don’t get me wrong, but when we are talking in the ‘physical’, sometimes the constant links to the Holy Spirit etc are not necessary.

For instance, I was at my cousin’s house, all of them are quite old, as in their ages range from 23-31, we were shocked when K (the 31 year old) said that he was 31, he looked much younger, my parents then started talking about marriage to him and asking when he plans to get hitched and what not. Then the topic of discussion turned to O (one of the daughters, she was not among us at the time) and when she would get married. They started talking in Yoruba and there were a few things I was not able to pick up. I then asked my mum later on if O had gotten a fiancĂ© yet.

Me: Mummy, has O gotten a fiancé yet?

Mum: Yes, by the Grace of God.

Me: No I mean has anybody actually seen him before?

Mum: We will all see him soon, in Jesus name.

Me: Yeah I know that, amen and all but I’m talking in earthly terms here, is there actually any physical evidence of him? I mean, has O even met him yet?

Mum: By the Grace of God.

Me: Sigh.

That’s just a summary of what happened, by this time I was fed up with trying to bring her down to earth. Don’t get me wrong o, indeed by the grace of God and in Jesus name, O will get the husband she desires, but for goodness sake…

Lol.. I know what you mean..
In many ways I think this stemmed from the saying "believing in what is not as though it is.."

It's just that we all have a knack for going a bit overboard with stuff..

Mama Roc is just like yours..

I know that feeling..
Some people are just used to saying all that, you know!
It brings with it a feeling of accomplishment...

Cappuccine Baby 24 April 2009 05:09

Hehe.. I understand what you mean.

I think the older generation of Nigerians were a mixture of superstition AND religion. I notice a lot of things are said to 'cover your back'.. like not joking about things in case they come true.

I used to joke and say to my younger brother 'are you crazy' and my mum would get furious with me, and force me to apologise. This popular lingo wasn't allowed.

Today, I had a discussion with my roommates about Harry Potter. When I read the book, I was completely aware that it was all fiction, but then the roomies explained how it can manipulate you, and that there were spirits in literature which can influence some people.

Well, my personal opinion is that, those people have to be careful with everything being influenced to become a witch because of good writing and description, is really saying something about the person.

I know a lot of Nigerians will disagree with me on that point.

@Feral
Exactly, superstition and religion, that's exactly what it is.

Lol you too? My mum and dad does that to me to, whenever I say 'are you crazy?' :D

My mum didn't even like me watching reading Harry Potter.

Thanks or dropping by :)

'If you believe so hard in God..i really dont think you should always spell it out by every word but by your actions and deed'

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Sometimes people just need to relax with things.

Thanx for dropping by dear :)

Eyah, how annoying (but it was funny, the way you put it).

Actually my family isn't "tooooo spiritual" like that, so I was stunned (and offended) when I met people that challenged my laidback, lack of Jesus-in-every-statement.

There's a balance to it- I think it was Solomon that said 'don't be over-righteous, or you will be despised. But don't be oover-sinful, else you will perish' (smthg like this sha).

I think some other people are afraid that if they let go of the church-talk, they'l backslide and dpend on their own strength, bot God's.
The bottomline is: try not to be annoyed with them. Tease them playfully when they overdo it. We learn from each other.

Bless you, sister (lol)

'don't be over-righteous, or you will be despised. But don't be oover-sinful, else you will perish'

Love that quote, hit the nail on the head :)

Hehehe, yeah I'll try not to get annoyed, something I need to work on :D

Like you said, things should be balanced ;)

Bless you too dear ;)
